Blog Post 4: Three Picture Books I Have Not Read Until Now

We Are Water Protectors

Author: Carole Lidstrom

Illustrator: Michaela Goade

Caldecott Medal Winner of 2021

-This book had absolutely wonderful illustrations throughout the entire book. All of the pictures were very lively, vivid, and flowed with the story wonderfully quite literally and figuratively. The story is about an Ojibwe girl and the Dakota Access Pipeline that was contaminating their drinking water. She unites all of her people to stand up for their land and all of the beloved creatures who reside and rely on the water. This book most certainly qualifies as a picture storybook as the pictures and words work together to bring one another to life.

The Undefeated

 Author: Kwame Alexander

 Illustrator: Kadir Nelson

Coretta Scott King Award Winner 2020, Caldecott Medal Winner 2020, Newbery Medal Honor Book 2020

-A wonderful dedication to the African American history that is so deeply rooted in America. The images that graced the pages tell a story that even words could not quite do them enough justice. This book delivers hope and dears the readers to dream big again. The illustrations and text went together perfectly even entailing such a much deeper meaning and victory. This book had such wonderful artwork that went into so much detail making it a perfect example of a picture storybook.

The Man Who Walked Between Two Towers

Author and Illustrator: Mordicai Gerstein

Caldecott Medal Winner 2004

-A book about the twin towers and a man who was a street performer and loved to walk on a tightrope. After seeing the twin towers he wanted to walk on a tightrope between the towers. He and a friend snuck onto the top of the buildings and they shot across an arrow with the cable attached to the other end, so he would be able to walk across. He ended up walking across on the cable and even dancing. The images go hand-in-hand with the words that are printed on the page. The theme is constant and matches terrifically with the story making it a great picture storybook.
