Blog Post #7: Poetry Books
“Poetree”
Author: Shaun a LaVoy Reynolds
Illustrator: Shahrzad Maydani
A very cute story that starts out with a little girl named Sylvia writing poems to a tree. Sylvia starts by going to the park with her dog, Shel, and she begins writing a poem and reading it to a squirrel that was in a tree. The squirrel seemed to enjoy her poem, so she tied it to the tree. The next day she returns to the park she realizes her poem is still there, but as it turns out it was a different poem, one she thought the tree had written back to her. They go back and forth with new poems and Syliva is filled with so much joy because she feels that she has found a friend in the tree. She does not seem to have all that many friends at school, but counts on her dog, Shel the most. One day, after Sylvia, composes one of her best poems, Walt is standing there staring at the poem he had written for the tree in her pocket. Sylvia goes on to realize that the tree had not been writing to her this whole time, but Walt was the one responsible for all the poems. He later goes on to apologize to Sylvia for being mean to her at school and they then become friends. I thought that this cleverly named book containing a poetry theme was splendid. The author did a fantastic job at connecting the pictures to the action taking place and coinciding with each of the words on the pages.
“Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices”
Author: Paul Fleischman

This particular children’s book contained a collection of various poems regarding insects. The intention of the book is to be read by two people by alternating taking turns. The insects and the way they are described throughout each and every poem brings about different types of feelings. The story is a very descriptive analysis of each insect and the story behind each and every one of them. As the poems unfold the insects all come together making their respective sounds to create a joyful noise. The pictures were usually on the title page for each chapter and some were even throughout the pages. Each chapter had a different insect and a picture to show just what that insect looked like and the illustrator did a wonderful job of displaying their physical characteristics. I think that this collection of poems would be a great way to introduce your students to various insects. It contains great information and allows your students to get an idea of each insect as an individual.
