Blog Post #2: My Literacy Experiences From Secondary School
I would not say that my literacy experiences during my secondary school years were negative by any means. I remember being able to read books/poems such as: “The Outsiders”, “Of Mice and Men”, “The Odyssey”, “Lord of the Flies”, “1984”, “Night”, “The Diary of Anne Frank”, “Number the Stars”, “The Great Gatsby”, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, “Hamlet” and, “Macbeth”. These are the most rememberable pieces of literacy that I was able to recall, mostly because they left some sort of impact on me whether it may have been a story that I had never heard of or imagined, or perhaps the content that was inside the story, or even the uniqueness that the story processed. I also would have to say that the English teachers that I had throughout my secondary school years did a really good job about how they would present the books to us. They would do a really great job of hooking us with something catchy in order to capture our attention where we would be very intrigued with what we were going to be learning as we read. Another great thing they did was differentiate the reading instruction. They would have us do various activities such as group work, acting out parts of the book, having us do activities that involved art, or even allowed us to watch the movies that were made after the book to see how the book came to life and compare and contrast the movie to the book.
My hope and goals are to try to make learning literacy fun and interesting as my secondary school teachers did. I really think by having differentiated instruction and allowing your students to have multiple means of engagement, expression, and representation will help allow their creativity side to blossom and really come to life even through learning literacy. I believe by doing this it will give all of my students a chance for their voices to be heard and for their opinions to matter. I hope that I will be able to give them a choice of allowing them to read certain books that appeal to their interests as well. I would like to incorporate various different activities and hopefully make the classroom a place where literacy would be a good word for my students. I hope that my classroom would be a place where they are able to feel safe and secure.
I have all the confidence that students will feel safe and secure in your classroom.
