Blog Post #6 BHH Reading

In our most recent book club that our group chose titled: “Fighting Words” there were a lot of connections that were made with the BHH strategy. The story takes place with two sisters with a difficult upbringing and with one suffering from child sexual abuse. The story is told from the point of view of the youngest sister, Della. The author really puts the spotlight on sexual abuse that sadly some young children are faced with and hopefully helps to give them a voice to speak out against their abusers. It truly surprised me to know that these tragedies take place all throughout the world and this story opened up a door to make room in order to have those difficult discussions and conversations.

As a future educator, I would like to be an advocate for anyone who has to face and maneuver through those tough times. I would most likely use a text like this for students who are most likely the same ages that the girls in the story were and would like to be able to discuss with my students on how it makes them think or feel. I feel like this would bring more awareness to children who may suffer from sexual abuse and to try to teach students how they can help someone whom they might know in order to help them in some sort of way.

Bringing a text like this in the classroom can be quite difficult and maybe even uneasy. I personally feel that this book presents the topic in a more manageable manner. It will allow students to discuss a topic and help them to form their own thoughts, ideas, and beliefs while being able to connect with the characters in the book in some shape or form.
